Basketball as a Metaphor for Life

I owe alot to the sport of basketball. As a matter of fact, i like to think that basketball was the catalyst to me making friends in America when I first immigrated here. Even though I didnt speak a word of english, my old friends and I communicated through the universal language of this very sport.

To many spectators or novice of the game, basketball may seem fairly simple and leisurely. One orange ball, one hoop - get the ball in the hoop. In reality, basketball goes much farther than that. From my years of playing pickup basketball and organized ball, I came to learn that basketball is a metaphor of life.

One’s personality and perception of life and goals are mirrored in their style of play. For example, I myself, enjoy having the ball in my hands as the point guard. I find it exciting and empowering that I am facilitating the entire team and playing off of what the other team’s defense gives us. This does not neccesarily mean that I like to shoot. I would rather dish off an assist to a teammate rather than see one of my shots swish through the basket. I believe this is very reflective of my perception of life. I like being the leader and managing others. I enjoy the pressure of other’s expectations and live for the spotlight moments.
